The Green Lunch Bag is; eco-friendly, super healthy and easier to pack than you think
Rule #1: Reusable containers.
The lunch bag is coming back anyway so why not the containers and cutlery? Reduce trash, pack lunch in reusable containers with silverware and cloth napkins.
Instead of juice boxes (pure landfill) pour juice or milk into a reusable sippy cup or drinking container. For sandwiches, entrees and snacks look for heavy duty dishwasher safe plastic containers that your child can open. A great replacement to plastic ziploc bags is the wax paper bag which is recyclable and landfill safe. Instead of packing a paper napkin try packing a cloth napkin and real silverware (the inexpensive stuff). And last but not least choose a quality eco-friendly lunch bag that is machine washable. I of course favor Hero Bags organic cotton lunch bags
Rule # 2: Would I eat this myself?
Don't send your child for a day of school with a lunch that you wouldn't eat yourself. I personally wouldn't eat a purple Scooby-Doo Gogurt that contains corn syrup and 4.8 grams of sugar per ounce (more per ounce than a coca-cola). Would I eat a tofu and wheat berry salad? No. I’m sure a tofu and wheat berry salad is exceptionally healthy – it’s just not appealing to me and I’m sure it’s not appealing to my kids. Be realistic.
Rule # 3: Know your ingredients.
Select fresh fruits & vegetables preferably locally grown and organic. When purchasing lunch fixings or premade items, look at the ingredients. Eliminate products that contain refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, palm oils, hydrogenated oils and foods with coloring and additives. Pass on overly processed and preserved meats or meats treated with hormones and antibiotics. Make your food choices healthy choices.
Rule #4: Keep it simple.
A green lunch doesn’t have to be a complicated lunch, even a peanut butter and jelly sandwich can be transformed into a nutritious lunch choice if you choose healthy ingredients avoiding jellies with high fructose corn syrup, choosing organic or natural peanut butter and a healthy whole wheat bread.
